"Success is a Numbers Game!"

Dear Success Seeker,

In our group coaching program, the ProCoach Success System, our members learn and practice implementing one essential success principle each quarter. This quarter we are focused on a concept called "Take Action Now!" which emphasizes the importance of taking massive action.

There are many benefits to being action-oriented including:

  • When you take action, things happen!
  • Bold action builds momentum that carries forward in all areas of your life.
  • The only way to get real-world feedback is to take action. It informs you what works and what doesn't thus allowing you to improve your skills and strategies.
  • When you take action, you attract attention increasing the odds that you will attract great people and opportunities.
  • Taking action has a positive impact on your self-image which builds your confidence and increases your motivation.

In addition to all the benefits above there is one more compelling reason to take massive action. You see, at the end of the day, becoming successful is largely a numbers game. In other words, it is about playing the odds. The more action you take the more likely you are to find, attract or even trip over a favorable result.

Imagine a situation where there are two real estate investors both seeking investment funds for their projects from private third-party investors. Both are equally skilled when it comes to communication skills and persuasiveness.

Investor #1 has an exceptional investment opportunity. It is well-secured, well-priced and in an area that has a proven track record for exceptional returns. Investor #2 has a property that is questionable at best. It is unproven, overpriced, speculative and located in a problematic area.

Investor #1 spends months doing research. He prepares professional-looking reports containing data, colourful charts and beautiful photos before approaching a small and carefully selected list of prospective partners. Investor #2 does not know his numbers and has little supporting data for his investment. However while Investor #1 is busy preparing his presentation material, Investor #2 takes massive action and eagerly approaches everyone he meets about his investment opportunity. By the time Investor #1 has his first meeting with a prospective partner, Investor #2 has enthusiastically spoken to over 30 people about whether they are interested in his opportunity.

Which investor is most likely to find a willing investment partner? The painful truth is that the odds are heavily in favor of the unsophisticated but action-oriented person. Preparation, planning and strategizing may be beneficial but the person who makes more presentations to prospective investors is far more likely to find what they are looking for. This is true in any sales situation; the more calls you make, the more clients you will get. The ball is in your court!

This is not just true with investment and sales opportunities. I have a coaching client who owns a construction company in Edmonton. His operation is unionized and he hires and lays staff off regularly depending on how many projects he has on the go. He told me recently that in his experience, out of every six or seven people he hires he gets a 'keeper' - a tradesman who has the skills to do the job well and who aligns with his company's values and work ethic.

Even when you were a teenager at a high school dance, success was a numbers game. The more people you asked to dance, the greater your chances were of getting on the dance floor.

A friend of mine says that the more action you take, the more 'success prone' you become. Wayne Gretzky said, "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take." Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "An ounce of action is worth a ton of theory." Harv Eker says, "Ready, fire, aim." And my personal favorite, the motto of the legendary French Foreign Legion: "When in doubt, gallop!"

Whether you like it or not, the fact is that people who worry about doing things right, never want to look stupid and avoid failure at all costs take far longer to achieve business success - if they ever do. Those who take massive action get there faster and they learn along the way.

So if you want to accelerate your results, get into action before you are ready. Start making more cold calls, hiring and firing more people and launching more marketing initiatives. Play the numbers game and you will increase your income and success faster than ever.
