"Reclaim Your Freedom!"

Dear Success Seeker,

The problem is not as it appears
As I write this newsletter America and the world are reeling from the election upset that made Donald Trump the President-elect of the United States. Yet the election result is not the problem per se. It is a symptom of a much deeper problem in the same way the surprise Brexit vote was earlier this year.

North Americans are losing their freedom
The real issue is that the American public feels like they are losing control over their lives - to the rich who keep getting richer; to the Wall Street financiers who crashed the economy and then paid themselves massive bonuses; to governments that continually burden them with more regulations and higher taxes; to the multi-national corporations that set up offices offshore so they can earn billions and avoid paying taxes at home; to Google that now controls the internet that use to be ours; and to immigrants who seem to be taking their jobs.

America, more than any country in the world, has branded itself 'the land of the free'. Americans don't just expect freedom; they feel entitled to it. Yet today ordinary people in America and Canada are having the experience of losing their freedom on every front. That's why Trump's undeliverable promise to 'make America great again' was so appealing. The core issue is that voters are feeling betrayed and powerless.

What you can do you about it
So in a world that is increasingly less free, how can you regain your sense of freedom and control? Here are four simple steps you can take to increase your sense of empowerment and freedom.

1) Take care of your health. You'd think this would be a no-brainer. You only get one body and if it is not working properly, life either sucks or ends. Being sick, even with something relatively minor, can totally ruin your ability to function, earn money, be mobile, travel or to participate in and enjoy life. In addition, body malfunctions are frequently accompanied by significant levels of pain.

In spite of the above, the vast majority of people fail to take the most basic steps to maintain their health such as eating healthy, exercising and avoiding substances that are harmful to their irreplaceable body. Statistics tell us that half of North Americans are overweight and over 25% are actually obese. You wouldn't put used oil into your car engine (which is replaceable) but you habitually fill your body full of chemical-filled junk food.

Here's the bottom line. If you want to experience freedom, the most important thing is to take care of your precious body. This will significantly increase the chances that it will take care of you!

2) No debt! Understand this; debt is jail! It is impossible to be free when you have to make payments on your debt. Consumer debt is the worst but even owning a home with a mortgage restricts your options and requires you to make payments each month. I'm not saying you shouldn't have debt. I'm just saying that you can never experience total freedom until you eliminate it. Which leads us to...

3) Live within your means. By this I mean that you don't spend money you can't afford to spend. If money is going out at a rate that in not sustainable in the long term, you are living beyond your means! It's remarkably easy to rack up consumer debt - car loans, unpaid credit cards and so on - and it is darned near impossible to pay it down. So stop spending money you don't have in order to maintain your lifestyle. Otherwise one day you will have to confront the painful reality that your financial ship is going down and you need help, which is the opposite of freedom!

4) Be true to yourself. Think about the situations in which you sell yourself out: times where you say 'yes' when you mean 'no', times when you do things that violate your own values or situations where fail to speak up/take action when you know you should. How do you feel when you sell yourself out like this? It sucks all your power, right? It's like being Superman with kryptonite; your heart sinks and you feel useless and weak.

If you want to be empowered and free, you must listen to your own heart and have the courage to act accordingly. This is what it means to be true to yourself. This doesn't guarantee that you will succeed in the material world but it does guarantee that you can look in the mirror and feel proud of who you are.

The ball is in your court!
There are many aspects of our lives where our freedoms are being eroded. But the four areas above are all areas where the ball is in your court. Freedom is available; the choice is up to you.

To your success!
