Dear Friend,

Many of you already know me... I'm Andrew Barber-Starkey of ProCoach Success System.

I've been coaching small businesses full time for the last 18 years. Perhaps my biggest claim to fame is being business coach to T Harv Eker during the time he grew his business from a single employee to a staff of over 100.

Since 1993, I have coached over 6,000 entrepreneurs and small business owners from all walks of life and my reputation for getting results is well known. During that time my business income has increased tenfold. Best of all, I have had the pleasure of watching thousands of my clients achieve their goals and dreams.

With a great reputation, a successful career doing what I love and a solid, profitable business you could say I have a pretty good life.

You might think, "Andrew's one of the 'lucky few' who made his small business successful!" Actually that is not true. When I look at myself honestly in the mirror I know the truth. My business has taken over my life!

I Lost Control! How Can That Be?

I am a Master Certified Coach, so it's embarrassing to admit... but I'll tell it like it is. Hopefully you can learn from my mistakes.

You see, back in 2004, when I launched my ProCoach Success System, I was literally "ON FIRE"... full of passion and excitement. I knew my innovative coaching system would empower and transform the lives of thousands of entrepreneurs, and I couldn't wait to jump out of bed each morning to get started!

I was so pumped up and focused that I incorporated my business, created all of our program materials, designed our website and wrote all of the content, set-up credit card merchant accounts, initiated a marketing campaign, installed a computer network and handled hundreds of other details all in less than two months. It was FUN, SCAREY and EXCITING all at the same time.

Too Bad It Didn't Last!

Unfortunately, the honeymoon didn't last. As my business grew, so did the pressures. Instead of spending my time doing what I love, coaching and improving our program, I found myself spending 90% of my time on administrative, operational and marketing areas of the business.

There were always issues to deal with, and there was never enough time to get everything done. I was consistently buried, stuck in "catch up" mode. My clients and growing business wanted more from me, so I faithfully poured in more and more hours, working late into the evenings and on weekends. I kept telling myself that it was temporary; that once I got things under control I would finally get the freedom and flexibility I wanted.

My Business Literally Took Over My Life!

I became consumed with ProCoach. It was with me day and night. I would think about it when I was at the gym, during meals, when I was out with friends, even on vacations. It was on my mind when I went to bed and it was waiting for me the moment I woke up each morning.

Sometimes I felt I couldn't breathe - just thinking about what I had to get done.

A typical work week would be filled with an air of anxiety and tension as I battled with having too much to do and not enough time. There was always something stressing me out; a deadline, a staff issue, someone who owed us money, a computer problem. Underlying it all was the fear my business would fail and the guilt of not spending enough time with my wife and daughter.

My business, which I felt so much passion for at the beginning, had taken over my life and become a demanding "beast".

Coming to work was no longer fun and exciting. Instead it was drudgery with me going through the motions. Even coaching my clients was not as exciting and fulfilling as it used to be. It felt like a J.O.B. that I wanted to escape from - except that I was unable to quit.

The "beast" was affecting my personal life too. I would:

... Work in my office as my family ate dinner without me
... miss out on precious time and milestones with my daughter Tiana
... be too busy to go to the gym - yet again
... look wistfully at my kayak gathering dust in the garage
... skip social events and lose contact with close friends because I was working

What Happened to the Entrepreneurial Promise of
"Freedom, Flexibility and Fun"?

I knew something was seriously wrong. Like most entrepreneurs, I started my business because I wanted freedom, independence and prosperity. Instead I felt totally trapped in my business and could not find a way out.

I kept searching for the answer - attending seminars and courses, reading books and hiring expensive business coaches. Nothing seemed to help.

As I was coaching my clients, I started to notice that I wasn't the only one having this experience. In fact almost all of my clients were either stressed out trying to build enough revenue to survive or feeling overwhelmed, like I was, struggling to handle the momentum of a "successful" business and maintain a balanced life.

We had all lost sight of why we started our businesses in the first place and were looking for relief instead...

It began to dawn on me that having a thriving entrepreneurial business and a great quality of life at the same time is both difficult and extremely uncommon.

9 Out Of 10 Small Businesses Fail in
the First Five Years

You've no doubt heard it said that 9 out of 10 businesses close their doors within five years. In researching this I discovered that the numbers vary slightly depending on the source, but as a generalization it is true. What seems strange to me is that this statistic has not changed in the past 25 years, in spite of an explosion of new resources. Think of it....

Have you read the following best sellers:

  • Guerrilla Marketing

Thousands of small business seminars and courses are being offered:

  • "Never Work Again"
  • "The Big Seminar"
  • "The Millionaire Maker"
  • "The Success Blueprint Seminar"

New business coaches, consultants, audio programs, websites and business success models arrive on the scene every year.

With all these "how-to" resources, why is it that 9 out of 10 new businesses still fail? Amazingly, no one questions this appalling failure rate or thinks to ask why the success rate of small business hasn't improved in the last 25 long years.

Reality Check: The Vast Majority of "Successful"
Business Owners Are TRAPPED in their Business

But what about the one in 10 that survives the first five years? How many of those are truly successful?

Looking around I would estimate that in the vast majority of the cases, probably 9 out of 10 of these "successful" business owners end up slaves to their businesses. They are weary, their passion is gone and they are either stressed financially, working long hours or both. They set out to create lives of freedom, flexibility and prosperity yet in most cases their businesses are giving them exactly the opposite.

If my estimate is accurate it means the entrepreneurial dream fails to materialize over 99% of the time. Yet it's the status quo and we accept it without question. We don't even consider how badly the odds are stacked against us when we start our businesses.

I Knew There HAD To Be A Better Way...

I am an optimist at heart and I'm relentless in my commitment to having a remarkable and happy life. If even 1% of people were creating businesses that gave them freedom, I knew it was possible, so I resolved to learn the secret. Working harder and longer just didn't cut it anymore. I wanted true success and I wasn't going to take "NO" for an answer. I was even willing to shut down ProCoach if that is what it took.

I began searching high and low for some person or system that could help me to do the work I love, succeed financially and remain free from all the traps of my business.

In February Of This Year, I Finally
Found The Missing Link.

"What happened in February?"

A friend recommended that I attend a 2-day seminar led by a coach I had never heard of before. Although I could find out almost nothing about the seminar leader on the Internet my intuition told me he may have a solution to my quest, so I signed up.

What an eye-opener! His approach is a stunning contrast to everything I have learned and been taught about building a successful business. The simplicity he brings to things is extraordinary. His methods for building a remarkable business and a great life (they are one and the same to him) were so easy to implement, so powerful and so profound that I was literally blown away.

In two days I took 42 pages of notes as he revealed one breakthrough principle after another. It was revolutionary for me; a voyage of discovery of sorts. Time after time I saw new possibilities that I had never considered before. How is it possible that I spent over $300,000 on business books, seminars and coaches and had never heard most of these distinctions and methods before?

Imagine creating a business that totally serves you instead of the other way around - and having FUN doing it? What a concept!

At the end of two days I felt re-energized about my business for the first time in years. I truly have not been this excited and optimistic about the future since I took my very first course in 1988.

This Was My Moment and I Seized It!

His principles and examples were so clear and made so much sense I was convinced that I had finally found the solution I was looking for. I resolved that, no matter what it took, I would hire this man to be my coach and mentor.

Even after spending two days with him, I knew very little about his background. He illustrated many of his principles with examples from his executive-level coaching in large corporations like Lululemon. And I was aware that he charged as much as $40,000 per day for his services. I could not imagine how I could afford to hire him - but I was determined to try!

Strangely, at the end of the workshop there was no sales offer or mention of how one could work with him further. The workshop was over and he was getting ready to leave the room. I wasn't sure what to do next.

I was clear about two things.

First, he had what I wanted. He was definitely leading the life of freedom, enjoyment and prosperity that I was seeking for myself and for my coaching clients.

Second, I was convinced he knew how to transfer that ability to me so I could create a great life for myself and share what I was learning with other entrepreneurs. To me the value of this was priceless!

I boldly seized the moment and asked him if he would be my coach.

Before responding he gave me a thorough cross-examination. I stood my ground and answered his questions honestly. When the conversation was over he had agreed to help me FREE myself from the trap I was in and to help me bring his principles to other self-employed entrepreneurs. I was both ecstatic and scared.

His price was steep but seemed attractive when I considered my alternatives which were: (a) continuing to suffer with my current reality; or (b) closing the doors on ProCoach and starting again.

Working Hard Is Not The Key To Success

I've always believed that the way to get ahead is to outwork others. "Do whatever it takes." That's been my motto.

And that philosophy worked for me - up to a point. After all, I own a $1M+ ocean view home on Vancouver's North Shore and make a solid six figure income.

But as I found from painful experience, no matter how hard you work it is never enough. And when you keep working harder eventually you reach the limits of your capacity and burn out.

My new coach has quite a different philosophy. He says that building a successful business is easy. Just decide what you want and diligently design your business to deliver it. He believes that having a large business is no more difficult than having a small one.

He also has a set of strategies to ensure you are having fun in your business. From his point of view, if you are not enjoying yourself what is the point of having a business?

These small shifts in perspective will transform your experience of your business. Instead of saying, "I'll be happy when...." and doggedly focusing on your goal you will actually have fun and enjoy the journey. This means there is no rush to reach the destination. It sounds unrealistic, but his system for implementation is both proven and surprisingly easy.

First and foremost he is an entrepreneur. He opened his first business in his early 20's and by the age of 25 he had created 3 successful businesses. Being a renaissance man he also pursued his passion for photography, was a competitive athlete, completed an undergraduate degree and published a research paper.

He travelled the world (Canada, United States, Mexico, South America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand) delivering leadership programs and training trainers and senior management. He has lived out of suitcase for longer than he can remember - and he loves it.
